Easter greetings!

In his letter to the Romans St. Paul urges the followers of Christ ‘not to be conformed to this age but to be transformed by the renewal of their minds.’ The liturgies, disciplines and devotions of the Church encourage and enable this transformation. Thanks to all of you who have joined in the liturgies, disciplines and devotions of Lent, Holy Week and Easter - in this way we have encouraged one another to open ourselves to the transformative power of the Holy Spirit working in and through the Church and this is so necessary if we are to avoid being conformed to the spirit of this age.

As the Church we are called to be changed, transformed, so that we can bear witness to that which is ‘good’ and ‘new.’ There should be something distinctive about the life of the members of the Church, after all Christ insists that we should be like a ‘light’ shining in a dark place and like ‘salt’ - savouring of something different from anything that the world has to offer. The Eucharist, which gathers and forms the Church, is heaven on earth. In the Offertory of the Mass we see the ordinary things of this world, like bread and wine, being transformed - they are taken up into the life of heaven - they become the Body and Blood of Christ who died, has risen and is now seated at the right hand of the Father.

We are made one with the risen and glorified Christ through the Easter mystery. The liturgies, disciplines and devotions of the Church help us to grow into who we truly are as members of the Body of Christ in order that we might bring hope to a world in need of that which is ‘good’ and ‘new’ - the Good News of the crucified, risen and ascended Christ. Look upon your Church, O God, with unfailing love and favour, so that, renewed by the paschal mysteries, she may come to the glory of the resurrection. Through Christ our Lord.

May the joy and peace of the Risen Christ be yours this Easter,

Fr. Frank Smith.
