Christmas is one of the most joyous seasons of the year when we look forward to Mass with our families, exchanging gifts, sharing greetings, and meeting loved ones. The people of the Old Testament also looked forward and waited patiently for the coming of the Messiah. Until, as it is written at the beginning of St. John’s Gospel, ‘the Word became flesh and dwelt among us’.

St. John shows us the amazing truth that the Word, God himself, took on the vulnerability of our human form and nature and shared what it is to be one of us. God’s power worked through Joseph and Mary to bring forth Jesus the Messiah. They were ordinary people who were open to God’s extraordinary activity in their lives and whose willing hearts and courage powerfully proclaimed the Good News of the One who would save His people from their sins.

Have you ever thought that God’s great present to the world, Jesus coming as a mortal baby, was overlooked by most of the people in the busy town of Bethlehem that night? In today’s world we are not so different. Many people are unaware of the coming of Jesus and His love for us. There are many people in the world who have no idea about His saving presence.

As we journey with the church in this Year of Faith, may we reach out to everyone we know as witnesses to God’s great love for us all and help them to experience that love. We all have a part to play bringing forth the light of Christ’s love and salvation to others. This Christmas, as we meet our friends and wish them ‘Merry Christmas’, may the Holy Spirit give us faith, courage, and a willing heart to proclaim the Good News of Jesus.

I send my blessing to you and your families that you may have a Holy and Blessed Christmas, and that God strengthens you to be a witness for Christ. God Bless You! Fr. Soji Olikkal.
